Meet Henry Akwaboah, Managing Director at Engen Ghana Limited. Henry recently celebrated his 10 years of leadership within the company.
*Engen Ghana was aquired by Mocoh in 2019.
Read more about his experience and feedback on his journey:
"A decade ago, exactly on 1st August 2010, I accepted the role of Managing Director of Engen Ghana Limited. Having previously worked for A.P.Moller Maersk and, Ghana Oil Company (GOIL). Whiles I received a lot of encouragement from peers, superiors and mentors, others had their doubts.
I took the skepticisms in my strides and encouraged myself with the words of Nelson Mandela “It always seem impossible until it’s done”. Ten years down the line, I can attest to the fact that the impossible has been done.
The journey thus far has been filled with successes yet, many challenges. To my Team, I owe you all the successes chalked. In the words of Harry S. Truman, “it is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit”, this has been the approach that has led to these successes. Let us continue with that. I thank you for the various words of encouragement and gift yesterday.
For all the challenges I have been able to surmount, I owe it to the following people:
- Hendrik van der Walt – As my Manager, you worked with me for 8 of the 10 years. Your support and encouragement made all the difference. You never thought of me as a rookie but an ally from the onset. I learnt many lessons even when we seemed to disagree on issues. I couldn’t have come this far without your Leadership.
- Yaw Agyemang-Duah(former MD GOIL) – I entered the oil industry under your tutelage. You exposed me to the industry in a relatively short time. Even though I left GOIL to become your competitor, you have continued to mentor me and guided me through many stormy times.
- Douglas Nanka-Bruce(Country Manager, Maersk Line, Sierra Leone) – Douglas, early in my career you harnessed my potential and taught me what sound management practices are. You made me see the opportunities in difficult situations. The sense of optimism I have carried thus far, I owe it to you.
Having achieved this milestone and with MOCOH on board as the new shareholder, I can only look forward to an exciting journey ahead knowing that, you shall ALL continue to offer me your support and encouragements.
With many thanks and best regards,
A word from our CEO, Michael Hacking who commented: “It is with the huge enthusiasm that we have embraced the Engen Ghana Team and their downstream business into the Mocoh Group. Henry has been very instrumental in ensuring that the transition went through very smoothly and that we were able to turn this business around. This acquisition is even more poignant as some of us were working with Engen on their expansion program many years ago when they grew their retail business outside of South Africa.
We so look forward to growing the company with Henry at the helm , modestly holding the reigns with the following words ringing in his ear “it is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit”.
We look forward to helping the full team establish their and our ambitions.
Michael Hacking, CEO of Mocoh
